DESCRIPTION

This is an attractive William IV rosewood open bookcase, dating from around 1835.

Constructed in beautifully figured rosewood, the bookcase is surmounted by a moulded top above a plain frieze and stands between a pair of elegant carved pilasters with stylised tulip capitals. The restrained architectural form is characteristic of the William IV period and showcases the striking natural figure and colour of the rosewood veneers.

The interior is fitted with three adjustable shelves, allowing the bookcase to accommodate books and decorative objects of varying sizes, while the shallow depth makes it particularly practical for modern interiors where floor space is at a premium.

A handsome and versatile early nineteenth-century bookcase, equally suited to a study, sitting room or library.

CONDITION

Presented in good antique condition. There are the expected marks, knocks, and surface scratches consistent with age and use. Minor historic veneer repairs and small losses are present in places, as is typical for furniture of this period. The shelves are adjustable and the bookcase remains structurally sound throughout.

One side has been ebonised at some point during its life, while the opposite side retains its rosewood finish. As is common with antique furniture intended to stand against a wall, this does not detract from its practical use. The bookcase displays an attractive colour and pleasing overall patina.
