Regency Mahogany Linen Press Wardrobe, Manner of William Trotter c.1820
A handsome Regency mahogany linen press, circa 1820, subsequently converted to provide hanging storage, and displaying characteristics associated with the work of the celebrated Edinburgh cabinet-maker William Trotter. Of particularly good colour and figure, the upper section is surmounted by a flared gadrooned cornice above a pair of panelled doors with strongly figured flame mahogany veneers. The doors are divided by an unusual spiral-twist brass closing strip, while further bold gadrooned mouldings divide the upper and lower sections and continue around the base — a decorative treatment particularly associated with Trotter's documented Regency furniture. The lower section was originally fitted with two short over two long drawers. As part of the conversion, the two upper drawers have been removed and their original fronts retained and fixed in position as faux drawers, allowing additional depth within the hanging compartment. The two long drawers below, each unusually framed with double cockbeading, remain functional and are fitted with brass knob handles with lion-mask detail. 
 
Raised on turned tapering feet, the press has particularly pleasing proportions and a good warm colour throughout. The combination of richly figured mahogany, spiral brass door moulding and gadrooned detailing gives the piece considerably more decorative interest than many Regency linen presses of the period, while the sympathetic later conversion makes it a practical wardrobe for modern use.

The hanging space has a height of 111 cm measured from the top of the rail, with an internal depth of approximately 48 cm
 
CONDITION
Presented in good antique condition, with the marks, knocks, scratches and general wear expected from a piece approximately 200 years old. The piece has been converted from its original use as a linen press to provide hanging storage, and lined with fabric. The original internal shelves have been removed and a brass hanging rail added. The two original upper drawers have also been removed, with their drawer fronts retained and fixed in position as faux drawers to maximise the available hanging space.
 
There are minor age-related marks and wear throughout and a small section of moulding, approximately 2 cm in length, missing towards the rear of the left-hand side at the central division. This is unobtrusive in use. There is some sun fading, mainly to the front of the lower section, and some old fixing holes at the top of either side. The doors and drawers operate as they should, and the piece is structurally sound and ready for use. A particularly finely-detailed piece with attractive proportions.

    We can usually arrange delivery throughout mainland UK using trusted independent furniture couriers, charged at cost. As a general guide, delivery for an average-sized chest of drawers is typically £80–£100. Larger items and more remote locations will incur higher charges.

     

    Most deliveries are completed within approximately two weeks, although faster delivery may sometimes be available. Standard delivery is to the ground floor unless otherwise agreed, and the courier will normally contact you in advance with the proposed delivery arrangements.
