This is an attractive Oriental style ebonised wall cupboard, probably dating from the mid-20th century, decorated with a hand-painted panel depicting an exotic bird amongst bamboo and flowering plants in the Chinoiserie taste.

The cabinet is finished in a black ebonised paint with simple gilt line decoration and painted floral motifs framing the arched door. The colourful bird panel forms the focal point of the piece and gives it considerable decorative appeal, making it equally suited for use as a wall cupboard or as an interior feature in a hallway, bathroom, bedroom or living room.

The single arched door opens to reveal a painted green interior providing useful storage, while retaining its working lock and key. Brass hanging plates are fitted to the top, allowing the cabinet to be securely wall mounted.

Constructed from painted timber, this is a decorative piece produced in the Oriental taste rather than a traditional Chinese export cabinet, making it an attractive and affordable decorative furnishing with a distinctive period character.

CONDITION

Presented in good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. The craquelure painted decoration remains attractive, with expected rubbing, light scratches, small chips and losses to the black painted finish, particularly around the mouldings and edges. The interior has been repainted in green at some stage and shows light signs of use. The cupboard retains a working lock and key and opens and closes well. Overall, it is a solid, decorative cabinet that displays very well.
