DESCRIPTION

A late nineteenth to early twentieth-century Chinoiserie lacquered kidney-shaped dressing table. The shaped top is raised above an arrangement of four drawers and stands on elegant cabriole legs.

The table is decorated throughout with gilt Chinoiserie scenes and borders on a red lacquer ground, depicting figures, wildlife, buildings and landscapes in the Oriental taste popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Unusually, the decoration extends to all sides of the table, allowing it to be displayed either against a wall or as a freestanding piece within a room, and it is constructed in oak at least in part.

Well proportioned and of practical size, the table would serve equally well as a dressing table, writing desk or occasional desk, combining decorative appeal with everyday functionality.

CONDITION

The table is in good, solid condition and remains sturdy and fully usable. There are marks, knocks, scuffs and general wear to the lacquered finish consistent with its age and use, together with some minor losses all round and major losses to the back associated with sun exposure. The drawers run smoothly. There is fading to the lacquer, particularly to the rear of the top and the left-hand side, with more significant sun fading to the decoration on the back. Overall, the table presents well, retaining its decorative character despite the expected wear associated with age.

    AUTHENTICITY & CONDITION

We strive to describe every item as accurately and honestly as possible. Statements regarding age, attribution, origin and provenance are offered in good faith and represent our professional opinion based on the information available at the time of listing.

As all of our items are antique or vintage, signs of age and use should be expected. Old repairs, knocks, wear, variations in colour and other minor imperfections are often part of a piece’s history and character. Where condition affects its integrity, appearance or usefulness, we will endeavour to make this clear in the description.
