An unusual and substantial mahogany examination table, probably dating from the early 20th century and made in the Georgian Revival taste, now offering considerable potential for repurposing as a country house boot room or hall bench, window seat or daybed. Measuring almost two metres in length, the piece has a long traditionally upholstered top incorporating a ratchet-adjustable backrest, allowing one end to be raised through a number of positions. The existing upholstery retains traditional horsehair stuffing but is extensively worn and is offered as a straightforward reupholstery project. The substantial mahogany cabinet base is enclosed to the front by two pairs of recessed panelled sliding doors, providing useful shelved storage beneath the seat. A single pull-out slide is positioned above the cupboards.
The base is finished with a boldly carved gadrooned lower moulding and raised on four substantial carved ball-and-claw feet, giving the piece considerably more decorative character than a conventional examination couch. Although originally made as an examination table, its proportions and cabinet construction lend themselves particularly well to repurposing. At almost two metres long, the combination of a generous upholstered seat and enclosed storage beneath would make it especially practical as a country house boot room or entrance hall bench once reupholstered. It could equally serve as a window seat or daybed, while the original adjustable backrest remains an unusual and useful feature. The mahogany has a pleasing rich colour and the substantial construction, panelled doors, gadrooned moulding and carved feet give the piece considerable presence. A highly unusual piece of furniture with plenty of decorative and practical potential, awaiting reupholstery to the buyer’s taste.

CONDITION
The mahogany cabinet base presents well overall, with the marks, knocks, scratches and general wear expected from age and use. The panelled sliding doors, gadrooned lower moulding and carved ball-and-claw feet remain attractive features. Offered for reupholstery; the existing leather covering is extensively worn, torn and perished, with areas of the traditional horsehair stuffing and underlying upholstery materials exposed. The piece retains its sliding cupboard doors, pull-out slide and ratchet-adjustable backrest.
As an antique or vintage piece, signs of age and use should be expected and are part of its character. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report.
