DESCRIPTION
An elegant George IV figured mahogany secretaire bookcase dating from the second quarter of the 19th century.
The moulded cornice with scroll terminals above a pair of astragal glazed doors with attractive Gothic glazing bars, enclosing adjustable shelves lined with decorative paper. Below is a full-width secretaire drawer, the fall-front opening to reveal a fitted interior with writing surface, small drawers and pigeonholes for correspondence and stationery. The lower section is enclosed by a pair of panelled cupboard doors opening to useful shelved storage on one side, and enclosed drawers on the other.
Raised on turned bun feet, the cabinet displays particularly attractive figured mahogany veneers throughout and offers excellent proportions, combining display, writing and storage within a relatively compact footprint.
A handsome and practical piece of early 19th century furniture, equally suited as a bookcase, display cabinet or home office secretaire.
DIMENSIONS
Height: 237 cm
Width: 114 cm
Depth: 55 cm
CONDITION
There are the usual marks, knocks, scratches and wear commensurate with age and use. The figured mahogany has a rich colour and attractive patina throughout. The shelves are adjustable and the interior retains its decorative lining paper. The secretaire drawer opens to reveal its original fitted interior with writing surface, drawers and pigeonholes. One knob is missing from an internal drawer.
The cabinet is offered without keys, although the locks remain in place. There is evidence that the pediment originally had a small central applied roundel or finial, now absent. Overall the bookcase is structurally sound and presents very well with no significant issues beyond the expected wear associated with an early 19th century piece.
