A handsome George III mahogany chest-on-chest, dating from the third quarter of the 18th century. The upper section is surmounted by a moulded projecting cornice above a particularly attractive pierced and carved fretwork frieze, which survives complete. Below are two short over three graduated long drawers, flanked by canted corners enriched with blind-fret carving and shaped terminals. The lower section incorporates a pull-out brushing slide above three further graduated long drawers and is raised on shaped bracket feet.
The drawers are constructed with oak linings and fitted with brass swan-neck handles and decorative escutcheons. Other than the lowermost escutcheon, there is no evidence to suggest that the brassware has been replaced, and its restrained design sits particularly well with the carved decoration of the cabinet.
Of good colour and pleasing proportions, the chest has considerable decorative presence while retaining the practical storage for which these substantial Georgian chests were originally intended. The combination of the complete pierced fretwork frieze, blind-fret carved corners and brushing slide makes this a particularly appealing example of George III cabinet furniture of the period.

CONDITION
Presented in good antique condition, with the expected marks, knocks, scratches and wear associated with approximately 260 years of use. There are some historic veneer repairs and small areas of age-related wear, but these are sympathetic to the overall appearance of the piece. The decorative pierced fretwork frieze is complete. The oak-lined drawers run well. The brushing slide has developed some warping with age and consequently sticks when being pulled in and out. The brass handles and escutcheons show appropriate age and there is no visible evidence of replacement brassware. The chest is structurally sound and presents very well overall, retaining a good depth of colour and attractive aged surface.
As an antique or vintage piece, signs of age and use should be expected and are part of its character. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report.
