DESCRIPTION

A superb quality Regency period mahogany sofa table in the manner of William Trotter. The rectangular crossbanded banded top with a beaded edge, rounded ends and drop leaves supported by scrolled supports decorated with roundels. Below, two inset finely gadrooned panelled drawers on the front and matching dummy drawers on the back, flanked by conforming rectangular panels, on a richly detailed gardrooned and beaded ‘U’ shaped support and quadripartite base with hipped acanthus leaf-carved downswept legs and gilt lion paw-capped castors.

The exceptional quality and distinctive design of this table, including the finely gadrooned edging, boldly conceived base, and use of characteristic castors, strongly indicate the work of renowned Scottish cabinetmaker William Trotter of Edinburgh.

DIMENSIONS

74cm high x 147cm wide (extended) x 60cm deep

CONDITION

There are marks, knocks and scratches commensurate with age and use. There are losses to the decorative mouldings, including to the beaded edge of the top and to the roundels of the drop leaf supports on one side. Losses are more numerous on the front (with the opening drawers) than the back, which is comparatively intact. If regular use of the drawers was not needed then the table could be placed such that the reverse is prominent, rather than the front. There is sun fading to the top and to a lesser extent to the base, with colour notably preserved on the drop leaf supports and one of the drop leaves. The colour is a little uneven on top. There is a stabilised split to the underside of the base. Overall a very attractive table of fine quality.
