This is an attractive 18th century and later walnut and marquetry inlaid escritoire. The moulded cornice above a cushion-moulded frieze drawer inlaid with floral decoration, with a floral and seaweed marquetry and feather and leaf band inlaid fall front opening to reveal a baize-covered writing surface with an arrangement of drawers fitted around a central cupboard containing three concealed drawers; all above three long featherband and floral marquetry inlaid drawers, the whole raised on shaped bracket feet.

There are marks, knocks and scratches commensurate with age and use. There are various minor splits, losses and repair to the veneer and inlay including movement splits to the veneer of the fall front. Some of the decorative embellishments are later additions - this is probably an early 18th century walnut escritoire that has received a decorative upgrade to the drawer fronts in the early 19th century including the replacement of some mouldings, although it is possible that the marquetry of the fall front is older. The external handles, hinges for the fall front and the bracket feet probably date from the same time. The central section of backboards of the base have been replaced.

The fitted interior appears original. There are working keys for both the fall front and the internal cupboard. All the joints are sound and the drawers run smoothly. The piece has a very good colour and patina and marquetry is generally in good order. A very attractive statement piece.
