DESCRIPTION
A handsome early eighteenth-century walnut chest on stand dating from the Queen Anne period.
The upper section is fitted with three short drawers above three graduated long drawers beneath a moulded ogee cornice. The drawer fronts are veneered in beautifully figured walnut displaying attractive burr and feathered figuring, which has mellowed over the centuries to a rich, warm colour and patina. The chest is constructed in elm.
The chest stands upon a walnut stand fitted with three drawers and raised on turned baluster supports united by an elegant undulating stretcher, terminating in squat bun feet. Although associated, the stand is well proportioned to the upper section and creates an attractive and practical piece of early English furniture.
Retaining attractive period brass drop handles and escutcheons, the chest offers generous storage whilst remaining of manageable proportions. It would make an excellent statement piece in a bedroom, hallway or drawing room, combining early eighteenth-century character with everyday practicality.

CONDITION
Presented in good antique condition commensurate with its age of over 300 years. There are the expected marks, scratches, knocks and minor losses and repair to the veneer associated with centuries of use. The walnut has developed a rich, mellow patina with attractive colour throughout.
There is evidence of historic woodworm to both the chest and stand. The worm appears long inactive and does not affect the structural integrity of the piece. The handles are later. The drawers run well and the chest is solid, stable and ready for use.
