DESCRIPTION

A highly decorative Chinese red lacquer cupboard with Chinoiserie-style painted decoration, depicting figures, pavilions, mountains and trees within an extensive landscape. The pair of panelled doors are decorated in gilt and darker tones against a rich red lacquer ground, surrounded by a scrolling foliate border. They retain traditional dark metal lock plates and ring handles. The lower front panel is further decorated with flowering branches.

The cabinet has a particularly attractive aged surface, with extensive natural wear and patination giving the red lacquer considerable depth and character. The darker panelled sides provide an appealing contrast to the richly decorated façade.

A useful and very decorative piece of relatively compact proportions, suitable as a small storage cupboard, bedside cabinet or statement occasional piece.

CONDITION

The cupboard is in good, honest decorative condition, showing wear commensurate with age and use.

There is general rubbing, scratching, knocks and losses to the lacquer and painted decoration throughout, together with areas of surface wear to the sides. There are cracks and separation to the top, as visible in the photographs. The decoration has naturally worn in places but remains attractive and legible, and forms an important part of the character of the piece.

We can usually arrange delivery throughout mainland UK using trusted independent couriers, charged at cost. As a general guide, delivery for an average-sized chest of drawers is typically £80–£100. Larger items and more remote locations will incur higher charges.
