This is a charming small late 19th/ early 20th century antique painted folk chest of drawers, probably originating from the Tyrol region of Austria or South Germany, known for its rich tradition of decorative folk furniture. The shaped and scrolled gallery back above two short and two long drawers and raised on turned bun feet, the whole painted green and adorned with delicate hand-painted floral garlands, wreaths and baskets of flowers with gilt highlights.
Antique Tyrolean Painted Folk Chest of Drawers
98cm high x 84cm wide x 47cm deep
The painted finish appears original and was probably originally blue but has been softened to a sooty green by discolouration of the surface varnish, which has been unevenly applied resulting in variation in the surface tone. There is age-related wear to the painted finish, including marks and paint splashes, losses and scuffs, and craquelure. The handles are later and there is slight evidence of the old handles on the drawer fronts. Inside the top left drawer there is a hand-carved "W&W" mark above an “N”; possibly a workshop or owner's mark. The joints are sound, the drawers run smoothly and overall the piece has a very attractive patina and is in good, honest condition. A charming and practical example of rural craftsmanship, perfect for a cottage or decorative interior scheme.
