DESCRIPTION

A decorative 19th-century Chinese export black lacquer domed chest (or trunk), finely decorated in gilt and polychrome with landscape scenes, flowering plants and wildlife.

The domed lid is decorated with a continuous landscape within a gilt border above a similarly decorated front depicting figures in a mountainous landscape. The sides are further enriched with flowering branches and a rabbit amongst foliage. The trunk retains its engraved brass lock plate, corner mounts and side carrying handles, all of which contribute to its distinctive appearance.

Originally intended as a household storage or travelling trunk, it now makes an attractive blanket chest, coffee table or decorative storage chest. Its useful proportions and richly decorated lacquered finish make it equally suited to a hallway, bedroom or sitting room.

The interior is clean and complete, retaining its divided upper compartment beneath the lid above the main storage space. It has been traditionally refinished in a deep oxblood red lacquer and remains clean, practical and ready for use.

CONDITION

The chest is structurally sound and presents well overall, with the expected marks, knocks and surface wear associated with age and use.

There is rubbing, wear and localised losses to the lacquer and painted decoration throughout, particularly to the top which has dulled, together with minor scratches and scuffs consistent with age. The engraved brass mounts, lock plate and carrying handles remain in place and display an attractive aged patina.

The interior is clean and complete, retaining its divided upper compartment above the main storage space. The interior has been traditionally refinished in a deep oxblood red lacquer and remains clean and practical for use. The lock is present, although there is no key.

Overall, this is an attractive and decorative nineteenth-century Chinese export lacquer chest, combining practical storage with considerable decorative appeal.

    ABOUT ALSO

Thank you for viewing this piece from ALSO Antiques.

We carefully select antique furniture and decorative objects for their quality, craftsmanship, character and individuality. Our tastes are broad, and we’re happy to be led by the piece rather than a particular period or style. Above all, we choose things we genuinely admire and would be happy to have in our own home.

Every item is individually inspected, researched and professionally photographed, with clear descriptions and honest condition reports to help you buy with confidence.

We believe good furniture should have a long life. Choosing antique keeps well-made furniture and existing materials in use, and we favour sympathetic restoration that preserves the patina and character acquired over generations.

    AUTHENTICITY & CONDITION

We strive to describe every item as accurately and honestly as possible. Statements regarding age, attribution, origin and provenance are offered in good faith and represent our professional opinion based on the information available at the time of listing.

As all of our items are antique or vintage, signs of age and use should be expected. Old repairs, knocks, wear, variations in colour and other minor imperfections are often part of a piece’s history and character. Where condition affects its integrity, appearance or usefulness, we will endeavour to make this clear in the description.
