DESCRIPTION
A 17th-century oak and elm refectory table, the substantial single-plank elm top raised on a pair of carved bulbous oak supports united by a stretcher and terminating in splayed feet.
The table displays the typical simple, robust construction associated with English refectory tables of the period. The well-figured elm top has acquired an attractive patina through centuries of use, while the carved supports add architectural interest without detracting from the restrained overall design.
Of practical proportions, the table is equally suited for use as a dining table, kitchen table or centre table, and represents a good example of early English country furniture.
DIMENSIONS
Height: 83.5cm
Width: 197cm
Depth: 79cm
CONDITION
The table is in good, solid condition and is structurally sound and stable. There are the expected marks, knocks, scratches and wear consistent with its age and long history of use. There is evidence of historic, localised worm to parts of the timber, which appears long inactive. The top has developed an attractive, well-used surface and patina over time. Overall, the table presents well as an honest seventeenth-century piece, ready for everyday use.
