DESCRIPTION

A handsome 17th-century joined oak coffer of attractive proportions, richly carved with a traditional lunette frieze above a pair of foliate arcaded panels divided by a central muntin.

The rectangular single-plank hinged lid opens to reveal a spacious interior with a lock and working key. The front is finely decorated with deeply carved foliate panels framed beneath a continuous lunette-carved frieze, while the panelled sides and sturdy stile feet demonstrate the robust craftsmanship associated with English country furniture of the seventeenth century.

Constructed in solid oak throughout, the coffer displays a wonderful deep colour and well-developed patina acquired over centuries of use. Its generous size makes it equally suited for use as a traditional blanket chest, or as a statement piece in a hallway or period interior.

Retaining excellent period character and attractive original carving, this is an honest example of seventeenth-century English furniture with practical storage and considerable decorative appeal.

CONDITION

Presented in good, honest antique condition consistent with over three centuries of use. The solid oak single-plank lid has bowed over time, particularly on the left hand side, and has an old split, both of which are typical characteristics of wide timber boards of this age and do not detract from the overall structural integrity. The chest has a later lock together with a working key. The hinges are later replacements, functioning well and allowing the lid to open and close smoothly.

There are the expected marks, scratches, knocks, shrinkage and wear associated with age and use, together with the natural movement expected in seventeenth-century oak furniture. Historic wear and losses to the rear stile feet, particularly on the right hand side, cause the chest to sit with a rearward tilt, although it remains sturdy and perfectly usable. Overall, it is a well-preserved example with excellent colour, attractive carving and a beautifully aged patina.
