DESCRIPTION

A handsome and substantial George III oak dresser with mahogany crossbanding, circa 1770, retaining a particularly impressive plate rack and offering an abundance of useful storage.

The upper section is surmounted by an inverted breakfront stepped cornice and fitted with four open shelves, flanked by enclosed compartments. The lower section has a projecting top above three frieze drawers, with a further three graduated central drawers flanked by panelled cupboards. The drawers are fitted with brass oval handles and escutcheons.

At 210cm wide, this is a particularly imposing example, with excellent proportions and considerable visual presence. It would make a superb feature in a large kitchen, dining room or country-house interior while providing a great deal of practical storage and display space.

CONDITION

In good, structurally sound antique condition with wear commensurate with approximately 250 years of age and use. There are various scratches, marks, knocks and stains throughout, together with some minor losses and historic repairs to the veneer. There is evidence of historic woodworm. The doors to the plate rack have some slight warping, and there is a repair to the front foot towards the right-hand side. The dresser has developed a particularly pleasing rich, warm colour and attractive patina, reflecting its considerable age.

Overall, a wonderfully characterful and substantial Georgian dresser which presents very well and remains both highly decorative and practical.
